MEYER WERFT GmbH in Papenburg was founded in 1795 and is still owned by the Meyer family, now in the sixth generation. Bernard Meyer is managing partner of the company.
During the past decades MEYER WERFT has achieved an excellent worldwide reputation for the construction of special-purpose ships. The company is especially well known for the construction of huge, modern and highly sophisticated cruise vessels. Until today the shipyard has built 28 luxury liners for customers from all over the world. The latest highlight: the delivery of the Celebrity ECLIPSE in April 2010.
But MEYER WERFT offers its customers even more: car and passenger ferries, RoRo ships as well as LPG tankers have successfully been built in Papenburg for decades. MEYER WERFT’s affiliated company, NEPTUN WERFT GmbH in Rostock, is also a builder of river cruise ships.
In 2002 MEYER WERFT made the biggest investment in the history of the company: a second building dock and pre-fabrication halls equipped with state-of-the-art laser welding plants were built. In 2008 the dock was extended by 120 m. These premises provide the best possible conditions for the construction of all customary ship sizes (up to 180,000 gt).
Today MEYER WERFT employs more than 2,500 people, making it the most important employer in the region. The family-owned company also provides professional training to about 300 apprentices. The workload will keep the company busy well into the year 2013.
