For more than 130 years the cruise liners of Holland American Line have been sailing on the oceans. Meanwhile the fleet has increased to 13 ships.
The MS Westerdam (formerly Homeric) was Meyer Werft's contribution to the growing fleet. The Homeric is special to Meyer Werft for a particular reason: It was the first cruise liner built in Papenburg. After a record construction time of nearly two years, it was delivered to the owners, Home Lines Inc. in Panama, in 1986. In 1990 the Westerdam underwent conversion and was extended by 40 m, having a new length of more than 240 m. Never before had a cruiser liner of this size been extended – a huge challenge for Meyer Werft at that time. The key areas that were converted and extended were the passenger and crew cabins. Additionally a two-storey show lounge was installed, providing seating for 700 guests. Gastronomic and sports facilities were likewise increased. Today the ship features a pool area on the sundeck that has a magrodome, i.e. a sliding glass roof. This design allows the passengers to have a good time by the pool even if the ship operates in cooler regions. When sailing in warmer territories, the roof can be opened .
